The Balloon Chair collection

The balloon chair is a rare object, halfway between a furniture piece and a contemplative sculpture. Shot in different sceneries and conveying different emotions, the relation to the background enhances the graphic component of the piece and the strength and power of the silhouette. The balloon chair is crafted by hand, made of solid wood and lacquered in a high gloss colour.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

Based on the furniture paintings, the balloon chair morphs into different shapes, sizes and colours. These investigations are part of the I AM NOT A CHAIR project, which concept comes from the contrast between uniqueness and belonging to a group, and how those tensions shape you in different ways - you look for protection but want to stand out.

FIRST PROTOTYPES
The piece bears a resemblance to the idea explored in the first sketches. The rough texture and the non-precise shapes put the focus on the gap between the imaginary sceneries from the drawings and the physical world’s constraints.

The morphing nature of the chair becomes tangible in this first three-dimensional work: a representation of the object of study that comes to life on a real scale. The work parts from the structure of a classic wooden chair. Suspended elements, flat and three-dimensional, give a dynamic context to the setting where the chair comes to life, invit ing the viewer to join the contemplation process. The object has a double nature, it carries over the organic and dreamy influence of the two-dimensional sketches but also shows its undeniable condition: It is an object now.

The search for the perfect balloon is based on the material and weight. From the first tests consisting of 3D-printed balloons and resin moulds, which turned out unsuccessful, to the later in vestigations in wood, the process showed the importance of having the same material throughout the whole piece. Being able to play with different types of wood for the different parts, (meaning having different densities, weight and resistance), was key to find the best option. The structure of the chair is handmade and the wooden balloon is hand-turned in a wooden lathe. The balloons have been manufactured in different scales, to fit different chair sizes.
